Social Business Day: June 28, 2012
Practitioners,
enthusiasts, and students convene in Dhaka, Bangladesh to celebrate the achievements
of Social Businesses around the world. Hosted by Professor Muhammad Yunus,
Social Business Day is an annual event which showcases how businesses are
successfully solving social problems. Distinguished speakers include NASA
astronaut Ron Garan who brought a copy of Professor Yunus’s book, “Creating a
World Without Poverty” to the moon and Lamiya Morshed, Executive Director of the Yunus Centre.
Professor Yunus coined the term “Social Business”, a
non-loss, non-dividend yielding company with a social objective. In Bangladesh,
Professor Yunus has founded several social businesses under the Grameen name
(including our website creators, Grameen
Solutions!), and practitioners now operate social businesses around the
world. Some of our favorites include Grameen Danone,
nutritional yogurt company, and Grameen
Intel, ICT service provider, and BASF
Grameen, mosquito net provider.
